What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS is a drug-free, non-invasive way to help people with depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, ADHD and chronic pain. Each person’s treatment is customised.

01

How does it work?

Using a magnetic coil placed on the scalp, TMS sends tiny pulses to a part of the brain that helps control mood — usually the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Each person’s treatment is customised based on the amount of energy required to activate a nerve in their brain (this number will generally be different across people).

02

What will I feel?

TMS feels like a tapping sensation on your scalp. Treatment starts at a low level and increases if you’re comfortable. It might feel unfamiliar at first, but most patients adjust quickly — often within a few sessions.

03

Is TMS right for you?

If antidepressants haven’t worked for you, TMS could be a safe, effective alternative. However, if you have metal (magnetic) implants near your head or a history of seizures, then we may need to look at alternative options.

The science

A magnetic field that activates neurons

The magnetic field passes painlessly through the scalp and skull to stimulate nerve cells in the targeted region of the brain, encouraging them to become active.
